Illustrations

Illustrations vary considerably from manuscript to manuscript, depending on the level of producers' expertise and the expense incurred in the codex's production. Illustrations can take the form of drawings or paintings, and may be small, or take up an entire folio. Gold, lapis lazuli, verdigris, and multiple other colors are frequently used in the most de luxe manuscript. They often depict scenes or themes that occur within the text, such that word and image effectively augment one another.
