CCCC 290 p. 96

CCCC 290
Localization:
Canterbury, Christ Church
Date: 11th century, 12th century
Language:
Latin
Predominant Feature(s):
offset

Two of the capitals on this page are offset, meaning they sit just to the left of the column. This occurs in some manuscripts when the start of a major sense unit and the start of a new line coincide. Narrow columns for offset capitals like this are often incorporated into the mise-en-page, and offset initials are an important feature for the potential localization of manuscripts. In the first half of the twelfth century, for example, Rochester manuscripts, often exhibit this characteristic.
